After leaving school, Jamie spent five years undertaking a number of short-term contracts, hoping they would lead to a permanent job. Determined to succeed, he also volunteered in his local community and went to college, emerging with NVQ qualifications. However, what he really wanted to build - a future in construction – eluded him, as he lost count of the number of jobs he applied for.
"I knew that getting work was not going to be easy," he said. "However when I was referred to Ingeus I started to think more positively - I began to believe there would be something for me."
His success came last year when Martin, who runs a home and garden maintenance company, turned to Ingeus to recruit his first employee. "I knew that trying to find the right person myself would mean hours of sifting through CVs and interviewing jobseekers, which was time I just did not have. However Ingeus took all the hard work out of it and found me somebody who has turned out to be an ideal employee," he said.
Fourteen months on, Jamie continues to work for Martin, developing new skills and becoming an indispensible part of the business. "I undertake the full range of jobs, from erecting and maintaining fences, to general gardening tidying and painting, and often do it all unsupervised," said Jamie. "I enjoy the variety of work but what I like just as much is the security of knowing I am settled in my job and can plan for my future."
Confident that Jamie is happy, Martin is also looking to the future. "I am helping Jamie fund his driving lessons, and we have bought a duplicate set of tools so that he can complete more jobs on his own. He works hard, is flexible, and customers trust him. He also does a first-class job, and that's why I am happy to invest in him."
"It feels very good to be in work and to know I can pay my own way in life," added Jamie. "Getting this job really lifted my spirits last year, and I am still just as motivated to get on each day. I really enjoy my job and I am pleased that Martin has put his trust in me. I'm learning all the time and know that as long as I work hard there is a future here for me – I won't let him down."
