John’s well-equipped to succeed

12 Jul 2022
John, 37, had experienced periods of unemployment due to redundancy and time spent in prison. He needed a helping hand to get back on his feet and that’s where Ingeus stepped in. Our justice division delivers Commissioned Rehabilitative Services to help ex-offenders settle back into their communities. Part of this work involves support with education, training and employment (ETE).

John began liaising with ETE adviser Rob Stone after being referred to Ingeus by Sunderland probation service. Rob was on hand to offer tailored support to help John move forward. During his sessions with Rob, John’s confidence began to grow. He completed an information, advice and guidance session on work readiness to ensure he was prepared to enter the job market.

It wasn’t long before John was offered work via an agency as a welder – but there were some obstacles to overcome. John was required to attend an induction but didn’t know how to get there. He also didn’t have the required PPE and couldn’t afford to pay for it – but Rob was able to secure this for him just in time for the big day.

John says: “I needed boots and workwear for the induction. I didn’t know where to go but Rob took me in his own car to where it was, and gave me all the stuff I needed. Unfortunately the job vacancy fell through, but I still have the useful workwear – the work boots and hi-vis clothing – and I’ll be able to use that in any job I do.”

Rob has also supported John in applying for a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card and he now has potential work as a labourer. Things are really looking up for John after a difficult time in his life, and he’s thankful to Rob for all his help.

“Everything I’ve asked of Rob, he’s done it straight away,” says John. “He has gone out of his way, giving me lifts, he didn’t have to do that. If I need anything or have any questions I can drop him a text and he gets straight back to me, he’s so helpful.

“I’ve made friends on probation and I’ve told them about Rob. I’ve said how he helps with funding and I’ve told them to ask their probation worker to refer them, he’s really good.”

Ingeus delivers Commissioned Rehabilitative Services (CRS) in partnership with the probation service. Ex-offenders are given support with accommodation; education, training and employment; and personal wellbeing. The aim is to reduce the risk of re-offending and put people on the path to a better future.
