A clean start ahead

Faris joined the
Greater Manchester Restart Scheme delivered by Ingeus in July 2025, and it proved to be the turning point he needed – a source of guidance and stability at a time when everything felt uncertain.
Arriving at Ingeus relying entirely on a translator, 25-year old Syrian-born Faris was uncertain and determined in equal measure. He wanted to learn, progress, and work, but early setbacks made the journey feel daunting. Missing out on a place at Bolton College’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programme was particularly difficult, especially as his friends’ secured places while he did not.
“I didn’t speak English, and when I didn’t get into college ESOL, I felt really upset,” Faris explains.
His Restart Advisor, Nazmin, recognised his potential immediately. With patience and encouragement, she enrolled Faris into a range of ESOL learning opportunities delivered directly at Ingeus’ centre. These included conversation classes, digital skills sessions, one-to-one language support, and structured homework designed to build confidence and independence.
Driven to succeed
Faris embraced every opportunity. He attended each session punctually, completed all home tasks, and approached every challenge with determination.
“Faris never missed a session. He always arrived with a smile and worked incredibly hard. His progress was inspiring,” says Nazmin.
Gradually, Faris began forming sentences, practising conversations, and communicating without the need for a translator. His confidence grew alongside his language skills.
“I started to understand more. I could speak small sentences. I felt happy because I could talk without help,” Faris says.
With his confidence rising, Faris focussed on his job search. He took part in group employability workshops, received personalised mock interview practice, and worked closely with Nazmin to build his self-belief. Together, they created a CV, explored tax and minimum pay, and completed a better-off calculation; an exercise that helped Faris understand how working full-time would improve his financial situation.
“He asked lots of questions and wanted to learn everything,” says Nazmin.
Faris’s commitment paid off. He has secured a job as a car wash attendant, working 18 hours a week, and has quickly settled into his new role. Today, he works confidently, communicates independently, and feels proud of how far he has come.
“I am very happy in my job and like the people I work with,” Faris shares.
Faris currently receives weekly in‑work support and knows Nazmin, and the Restart Scheme, is there whenever he needs guidance.
“He’s independent, motivated, and proud of himself. Supporting Faris has been a pleasure,” says Nazmin.
Faris’s journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through commitment, personalised support, and belief in everyone.
