Birds of a feather

Ask Business Manager Shahid what he values most about working at Ingeus and his response is immediate: ‘It’s the people that make it’.

Those people come from diverse backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives but naturally pull in the same direction when it comes to Ingeus’ mission of ‘Enabling Better Lives.’ They’re people, Shahid says, that extend from the executive team and directors, onward through the teams he himself recruits to work in the busy Tower Hamlets centre he currently oversees.

“Everyone is approachable, regardless of their position,” says Shahid, who joined Ingeus four years ago. He has since been nominated for a Frontline Manager of the Year industry award and regularly mentors new Ingeus managers.

“When I joined Ingeus I was struck by the effort that had gone into making the facilities welcoming and comfortable for team members, as well as participants. Our jobs can be demanding and having a space to sit for a quiet lunchtime coffee with a colleague is important. There’s no kettle hidden away in a staff cupboard here!

While good surroundings help, Shahid insists it’s the people that make the real difference:
“There’s a shared attitude at Ingeus, a commitment to corporate values that I’ve not seen as strongly in 30 years working in this sector. That’s what I look for when I’m hiring. Skills can be taught, but mindset and attitude can’t.”

Having worked alongside some of his senior colleagues in previous roles, Shahid is preparing for his next Ingeus move. He’ll shortly be managing one of the health assessment centres, once again under the leadership of a trusted former director.

“My roles may change and are far from the original accountancy path I trained for,” concludes Shahid, “but there’s nothing that tops the thank you from someone you’ve helped to progress. I felt that during my early career as an employment advisor and I still feel it today.

“I like to look at the bigger picture – that it’s not just individuals we’re helping – it’s their families and communities too. That’s definitely what’s held my people career on course all these years. I think it’s why most of us work in this sector and I’d highly recommend it. Working with like-minded colleagues with so many opportunities to progress and make a real impact for others… I wouldn’t trade it.”
