Stephen, 64, had always been a familiar face at the local market, where he ran a bustling stall. As a self-employed market trader, he thrived on the daily interactions and the satisfaction of running his own business. But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, everything changed. The lockdowns and restrictions forced him to close his stall and cease trading, and he found himself out of work for nearly two years.
During this challenging period, Stephen faced numerous obstacles in finding a job. His lack of formal qualifications and the perception of his age as a barrier made his job search even more daunting.
After almost two years of job searching, Stephen joined the Restart Scheme and was introduced to Maureen, an adviser for participants aged 50+.
Maureen quickly understood Stephen's desire for a stable job that would provide him with a routine and the opportunity to work for several more years. Together, they developed a personalised support plan tailored to his needs aimed at getting him back into work as quickly as possible.
This included a range of iWorks e-learning modules and Ingeus workshops designed to boost his confidence. Stephen also attended specific 50+ workshops that taught him how to highlight his value as a mature job seeker, address age-related concerns with employers, and develop strategies to overcome setbacks and build resilience.
Stephen secured work experience by volunteering at Rebuild with Hope, a local charity shop. This experience not only enhanced his CV but further boosted his self-confidence which continued to grow in his new role.
Stephen's dedication and hard work paid off when Rebuild with Hope offered him a job. The Restart Scheme provided him with suitable work clothing and together they started getting him the training and qualifications he needed to succeed. Stephen , and he soon obtained a PAT testing qualification and began traveling to various local shops to PAT test merchandise, enjoying his new role and the sense of purpose it brought.
Through ongoing support from Maureen, Stephen expressed his desire to work more hours. With her help, he successfully negotiated with his employer to increase his hours. Now, Stephen works at Rebuild with Hope's retail store in the centre of Wigan. He has even discussed his intention to continue working past retirement age.
Reflecting on his journey, Stephen shared, "Over the past twelve months, I have worked hard with the Restart Scheme and Rebuild with Hope. By doing this, I have now got a PAT testing qualification and have seen my hours increase to 18 hours. This is a role I can see myself doing after my official retirement date. I would recommend others to go to Restart Scheme and get all the help and support that I have had."
