Investing in growth, every step of the way

For Jessica, learning and development have been a constant throughout her career. From retail and cabin crew roles to administration, occupational health and leadership positions, every step has provided new opportunities to grow, learn and help others succeed. 

Today, Jessica is a Business Manager on the Restart Scheme in Wigan. A role she has held for more than three years. Alongside managing teams and supporting programme delivery, she is also a Workplace Sleep Ambassador, Wellbeing Champion and Vitality Champion, helping colleagues prioritise their health and wellbeing. 

As Learning and Development Month shines a spotlight on the value of continuous learning, Jessica's shares her journey, demonstrating how investing in personal growth can open doors to new opportunities and help build a rewarding career. 

Before joining Ingeus, Jessica's career had taken her in several directions. After working in retail while studying, she moved into a role as cabin crew, which she loved. However, she wanted more of a stable long-term career and made the decision to start again in administrative roles within accountancy and occupational health. A stepping stone towards Ingeus. 

Nearly five years later, she continues to build a career that aligns with her passion for supporting people and enabling positive change. 

While no two days are the same, Jessica's role centres around supporting her teams to succeed. 

"We start every single morning with a huddle to set the day up for success and then my workload will vary between online meetings, supporting my team and a lot of data and spreadsheets," she says. "But I do love an organised spreadsheet!" 

The role combines leadership, coaching, operational management and problem-solving, but it is the people she works with that make the biggest difference. 

"The thing I enjoy most about my job is the team I work with. Everyone has ideas to bring to the table that are always listened to and taken into consideration. Everyone around me clearly has the same goal which is to enable better lives." 

For Jessica, helping others develop is one of the most rewarding aspects of leadership. 

"I love seeing people achieve their full potential, and that goes for both colleagues and participants." 

Personal development has also played a major role in her own career journey. One of the most significant opportunities came when she undertook an apprenticeship offered by Ingeus while settling into her Business Manager role. 

"When the opportunity came up, I knew that I had to take it as I was still fairly new to the Business Manager role and I wanted to make sure I was being the best leader I could be, not just a manager." 

Supported with study time and access to additional learning resources, Jessica successfully completed her apprenticeship and achieved Chartered Manager status. The experience transformed not only her leadership approach but also the way she supports others. 

"I think as managers we can often take good performance for granted when it continues to come, but actually these are the times to step up as a leader and make sure your team feels continually valued for the excellent work they do." 

The skills she developed have enabled her to support colleagues undertaking their own apprenticeships, helping them navigate their learning journeys with greater understanding and empathy. 

Jessica explains that Ingeus' commitment to development is one of the reasons she has stayed with the organisation. 

"The best thing about working at Ingeus for me has been the opportunity to invest in my own development." 

She credits much of her growth to the encouragement she has received from colleagues and her manager, who has supported her progression and given her the space to develop her confidence and leadership skills. 

"I have felt supported to try new things and been given opportunities to practise new skills which has built my confidence." 

Looking back over the last five years, Jessica is proud of how far she has come. 

"Personally, I believe I have become a strong leader over the last five years and look at the team I have around me now and feel really proud of the coaching and development I have been able to give back to them."
