Keeping clinical skills, gaining new opportunities

After building her career in the NHS, Kate was looking for a role that would allow her to continue using her clinical expertise while exploring new opportunities for professional growth. She found exactly that at Ingeus. 

Today, Kate works as a Clinical Support Lead within the Health Assessment Advisory Service, combining assessment work with leadership responsibilities and supporting other healthcare professionals to develop and thrive in their roles. 

For Kate, one of her concerns when moving away from a traditional hospital environment was whether she would still experience the teamwork that had been such an important part of her NHS career. 

"Coming from an NHS background, it was really important for me to be able to do a job that allows me to work in a team, because it's something that I really thrive off," she explains. 

It didn't take long for her to realise that collaboration remained at the heart of her working life at Ingeus. 

"For me, it's the people that I work with every single day. In order for an assessment to happen, there's lots of different job roles and there's lots of collaborative working to ensure a streamlined assessment experience." 

While her day-to-day role looks very different from working in a hospital setting, the sense of shared purpose remains familiar. 

"One thing that I really thrive off each day is knowing that I'm working as part of a team, and other people are all working really hard together," says Kate. "Whilst this is not a role in a hospital anymore, that focus on teamwork is definitely something that Ingeus promotes and values." 

Alongside a supportive culture, Kate has welcomed the opportunity to continue developing her clinical knowledge and broaden her experience. During her time at Ingeus, she has undertaken training across multiple assessment types, allowing her to build a more varied and diverse career. 

"I have been lucky enough to do different types of assessment and this training has allowed me to have a huge amount of variety in my working week," she says. 

The opportunity to work across different areas has exposed Kate to a wider range of conditions and claimant experiences than she might have encountered previously. 

"You see different types of claimants. It's enabled lots of variety in my day-to-day working." 

For clinicians who are concerned about maintaining their professional knowledge after moving into a non-traditional healthcare setting, Kate believes Ingeus offers the best of both worlds. 

"As part of my role as a Clinical Support Lead, I do assessments, so this enables me to keep up to date with clinical knowledge and allows me to keep my registration in the job role." 

Her working week includes a mixture of face-to-face, telephone and back-office assessments, creating a role that offers both challenge and variety. 

"Typically, day to day, I don't have a set routine and that's something that I really, really enjoy," she says. "I know that every single day is going to be different. I have to prioritise different tasks, but it gives me variety.” 

In addition to assessment work, Kate has also completed auditor training, providing another opportunity to develop professionally. 

"I have been trained as an auditor and this has allowed me to really use my critical analysis skills in balance with my medical knowledge," she explains. "I've been able to develop my knowledge on certain conditions that I really didn't have much experience of before in my NHS career." 

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of Kate's role is the opportunity to support other clinicians as they transition into assessment careers of their own. 

"One of the things that I love about my job role is being able to see competence and confidence grow in the assessors that I support," she says. 

"When they first come to the team, they can be quite nervous, and one of the things that I really enjoy is being able to put specific support in for these assessors. They know they can come to me; they know that I'm going to be able to help them." 

Seeing those clinicians develop and succeed provides a strong sense of achievement. 

"Seeing that confidence and competence grow week by week, and then really thriving in that role is something that I find so rewarding."
