Two's company

Spending two years in the same job may not seem unusual to many people, but for Jess - a Finance, Benefit and Debt Advisor for the Ingeus justice team - it’s a notable milestone. Feeling like a nuisance in past jobs for requesting reasonable adjustments to manage her disabilities, the support she’s found since joining Ingeus has enabled her to thrive in her wide ranging and responsible role. 

“Even with good performance I’ve never been able to hold down a job for more than a year before,” says Jess, who is 34 and has a background in educational care and administration. “I would request flexibility, but it felt like a burden and that I was eventually pushed out. 

“I was upfront with Ingeus from my interview onwards and was met with immediate help and reassurance. It’s been tremendous ever since.”

Jess is autistic and has ADHD. She also lives with Type 1 diabetes and, in recent years, has been diagnosed with several autoimmune-associated conditions, including endometriosis, hypermobility and fibromyalgia. Two years on from joining Ingeus, Jess says the stability and support she’s received have given her the capacity to focus on both work and pastimes. She loves walking and gardening and has recently rekindled her passion for children’s face painting, renowned for her trademark bold and glittery designs.

At work, Jess supports people on probation across Lincolnshire to navigate their monetary worlds. From accessing benefits and setting up payment schedules, to restructuring debt and teaching day to day budgeting skills, she aims to create a safe, supportive space for them to reset and progress – just as she found herself.  

“Some prison leavers have no idea how to manage bills and money in today’s modern world,” adds Jess. “If I can help an individual get settled and turn away from reoffending, then I’m helping them and the wider community. It’s important to listen and help people tackle what they’re facing – I certainly appreciate others doing that for me.”

Jess works full time and, on the suggestion of her manager, compressed hours – taking alternate Fridays off. She is given time for medical appointments and is actively encouraged to fully recuperate after procedures. She values the trust and autonomy she’s given to work with her busy case load and is an active member of Ingeus’ Employee Resource Group, the Disability Network. She also thinks the wellbeing hour her team is gifted each week reinforces the company’s genuine commitment to good health.

She concludes: “All companies have values, buzzwords they quote, but they’re real here at Ingeus – it’s a culture of genuinely caring people. Adjustments are suggested, not argued, and feedback is acted on. I feel valued and that I’m being given the chance to make a difference. It’s a total switch from my past employment.
