Nurse’s career switch puts him in a stable condition

After nine years nursing at University College London Hospital, including the intensive care unit, Simone was looking for a role that offered a better work/life balance.

Tired of long hours and changing shifts as a Registered Nurse, he has now found that stability as a Functional Assessor with the Ingeus Health Assessment Advisory Service in Wandsworth.

Carrying out Work Capability Assessments he examines how a person’s health condition or disability affects their ability to work. It plays an important role in determining financial support from the Department for Work and Pensions.

The consistent hours give him a more structured life while the job offers a variety of elements, so his days are divided into:

Training: he measures colleague competencies and coaches new starters.
File assessments: he considers claims for support based on the information an applicant has supplied and judges whether a face-to-face assessment is required.
Face-to-face: he talks to applicants in person, via video or on the phone to get a better idea of their health condition and how that might affect their working capability. For instance somebody with anxiety who finds it difficult to work in an office might be better suited to working from home.

The 34-year-old has a hybrid role, working both from the office and home and says: “I like the flexibility of the job, with the different tasks adding variety to my days.

“Working in a hospital with the long shift hours was difficult and the clinical decision-making could be stressful.
The regular hours I have now work better for me and I’d recommend it to anybody looking for a good work/life balance and a more stable existence.”
