What Jobs can I do with no GCSEs?

5 Jun 2023
Although good GCSE grades are beneficial, they are not the be all and end all when it comes to getting a job and finding your feet in the working world.

There are a number of jobs with no GCSE requirements, and, if you need it, we’re here to help.

What are GCSEs?

A GCSE is an academic qualification in a particular subject, usually taken at high school or college. GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. Of all subjects, English and maths are the most important as they are requirements for a number of university degrees, apprenticeships, and jobs.

However, if you haven’t any GCSEs at all, don’t worry: there are various different options available to you!

Do Any Apprenticeship Opportunities Exist?

Absolutely! An apprenticeship is a position that combines work and study. While certain apprenticeships do require qualifications, there are a significant number that don’t. These are known as intermediate apprenticeships (or entry level or level 2 apprenticeships).

Intermediate apprenticeships generally last one or two years, and, once complete, count as a qualification. For this reason they are well worth investigating - and they provide a well-structured introduction to the working world, too!

GCSEs or not, both apprenticeships and jobs will require you to have a CV, and possibly a personal statement too. Check out our tips on how to write a great CV and what to include in a personal statement for any help you might need.

Jobs You can do With no GCSEs:

Games Tester

We might as well start with the most fun job on the list. Being a games tester is just that: you get paid to play and evaluate games all day! No GCSEs are required, all you need is a knack for gaming. Although being a games tester isn’t the highest paid job out there, if you’re passionate about it, it can be your way into a career in game design and developing.

A Position on the Police Force

The police force provides a great way to develop yourself both personally and professionally. No GCSEs are needed to enrol as a police cadet. And because of the structure, you will likely have opportunities to climb the ranks should you wish to stay and grow your career in the force. The higher your rank, the higher your earning potential.

Firefighter

Another emergency service, an apprenticeship in firefighting does not require any GCSEs. It is a job that directly enables you to help people, but to do so you need both physical fitness and the ability to handle high stress situations. Because of the obvious danger linked to the job, it is generally very well paid.

A Position in the Navy

The navy has a number of different jobs to choose from, including chefs, engineers, and even marines. With no previous experience required and on-the-job training, this makes it a great option if you have no GCSEs. However, it is important to note that involvement in the navy is extremely rigorous, and it can be a physically and mentally taxing job.

Journalist

If you have a knack for writing and can meet (sometimes tight) deadlines, a career in journalism might be for you. With more general interest in a portfolio than GCSEs, aspiring journalists can build this up for themselves by writing pieces for local newspapers or publishers. Once your portfolio takes shape, you can start approaching editors and bigger publishing houses.

Construction Worker

Although you don’t need any GCSE grades for most positions in construction, you will need a good deal of physical fitness and core strength. But if you’re not put off by the idea of hard work, the majority of construction jobs won’t require any prior experience and will train you up on-site.

Warehouse Ops

Working in a warehouse is not the highest-paid job but, if you find comfort in routine and rollout, it can be both peaceful and fulfilling. Most warehouses work with large amounts of stock and have a high number of people on the floor, so having clear, organised systems is necessary. This generally means the job is made as simple as possible, though there may not be much job variance day-to-day.

Call Centre Agent

Although no GCSE grades are needed, people skills are. Working in a call centre is, in essence, the act of solving people’s problems on repeat. But that need not be difficult or combative if you know how to communicate clearly and effectively. If you’re able to keep your calm and have a naturally logical way of thinking, you might find call centre work surprisingly rewarding.

Support Worker

Support work involves looking after children, the elderly or those with special or specific needs. You don’t need any prior training or GCSEs but you do need a heart for people and a caring disposition. If you’re interested in this as a viable job and you’ve done any care work before, even something as unofficial as looking after younger siblings, be sure to mention this on any application as it can count in your favour.

Train Driver

Train drivers, once trained, can earn a decent salary and the job itself is not in any way demanding. But, rather ironically, training someone to drive trains is quite a lengthy process. Because of this, pursuing a job as a train driver may not pay immediate dividends, but once you know the ropes, train driving could be the job you never knew you wanted.

These are just a few of the interesting and available positions that require no GCSE qualifications, but by no means all. The entire list is too long to mention: cashier, taxi driver, retail worker, receptionist, and more!
